Spotting, Preventing and Treating Soybean Rust

The latest rust forecasts and observations are in the Crop Updates section of the website.

Asian soybean rust is a fungus spread by wind-borne spores that causes lesions on cotyledons, stems, petioles, leaves and pods of soybean and other host plants. This disease destroys photosynthetic tissue and causes premature defoliation and, if untreated prior to the R6 growth stage, can result in severe yield reductions. While the disease does not overwinter in North Carolina, rust spores are spread by weather events.  Soybean rust has been detected in North Carolina fields each year beginning in 2005.  So far, rust has not arrived early enough or been severe enough to cause economic harm.   Scouting, prevention and early detection are essential to combating soybean rust!
